How our Kent climate affects the health of your heels

The weather in Kent is changeable and we often get four seasons in one day.   Different climates can potentially affect the skin on your heels in several ways:

  1. Dry Weather:  In dry weather conditions, especially during winter or in arid climates, the air tends to be less humid. This low humidity can lead to dry skin, including dry and cracked heels. Dry skin lacks moisture, making it more prone to cracking, flaking, and becoming rough. It can be uncomfortable and may even lead to pain or bleeding in severe cases.
  2. Hot Weather:  During hot weather, the heat can cause excessive sweating. Prolonged sweating can soften the skin on your heels, making them more prone to friction and pressure. This can result in the development of blisters or calluses, which can be uncomfortable and potentially lead to cracked heels.
  3. Humid Weather:  In humid weather, the air is saturated with moisture, leading to increased perspiration. Humidity can make the skin on your heels soft and more susceptible to friction, which may result in blisters or calluses. Additionally, excessive moisture can create an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of skin infections such as athlete's foot.


To maintain healthy skin on your heels, it's important to take care of your feet by following these tips:


  1. Moisturise:  Regularly moisturise your heels with a thick, emollient-based foot cream or lotion. This helps to keep your skin hydrated and prevents dryness and cracking.
  2. Exfoliate:  Gently exfoliate your heels with a pumice stone or foot scrub to remove dead skin cells. This promotes smoother skin and reduces the risk of calluses.
  3. Wear appropriate footwear:  Choose shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning for your feet. Avoid wearing ill-fitting or open-back shoes that can cause friction or pressure on your heels.
  4. Hygiene:  Maintain good foot hygiene by washing your feet daily and drying them thoroughly, especially between the toes. This helps to prevent bacterial and fungal infections.
  5. Protect:  During extreme weather conditions, such as very hot or cold weather, protect your feet with appropriate footwear or socks. In cold weather, wearing warm socks and avoiding prolonged exposure to cold can help prevent dryness and cracking.
  6. Stay hydrated:  Drink enough water to keep your body and skin adequately hydrated. Hydration from within can also help maintain the moisture balance of your skin.
